Samuel Provoost collection, 1786-1831.

A collection of miscellaneous items relating to Bishop Provoost; there are no papers by the Bishop in the collection. Papers relate to his consecration, 1787; his part in the consecration of Bishop Edward Bass; his poor health and incapacitation; difficulties concerning his authority and relations with Bishop Benjamin Moore; his attempt to resume charge of the Diocese of New York, 1812-1814; and negotiations concerning the consecration of Bishop James Kemp, of Maryland, 1814-1815; and minor matters. There is also a pamphlet by "Omicron" (the Reverend Benjamin P. Aydelott) about the case of Bishop Provoost and resignation of his diocesan jurisdiction, 1831, together with a book of English manuscript sermons, author unknown, 1683-1735, which belonged to Provoost, and a pamphlet of 1785 from his library, bearing his signature. Provoost's signature also appears on the certificate of consecration of Bishop Thomas John Claggett as Bishop of Maryland, 1792.
